Mel Gausden is an artist whose work utilizes contemporary landscape painting as a means to explore personal and collective memory, as well as environmentalism, through the retelling of stories. The spaces within these narratives are woven together from memories of past events, emotions, photographs, and daydreams. Her artistic process plays a significant role in shaping her work. Initially, she creates small watercolour compositional studies, which she then reverse engineers into larger pieces. This approach allows for ongoing intuition, abstraction, and experimentation in her final works. Mel Gausden obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2009. In 2016, she received a grant from the Georgian Bay Land Trust. Her artwork has been published in Where Vancouver Magazine and Create! Magazine. She is represented by Bau-Xi Gallery in Toronto and Vancouver.
