Title: Scattered series, Fairy candle, Toronto Music Garden

Artist Statement: Scattered series, Fairy candles, Toronto Music Garden I made the “fairy candles” photograph in the Toronto Music Garden. The garden was inspired by Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello. More than a hundred plants were chosen to create this enchanting garden with its beautiful surroundings. As a photographer I use film cameras, black & white film and “lith prints” which have their own unique sensibilities to transform my emotional experiences onto paper. Such choices were inspired when I encountered the delightful flowers of the garden while listening to the soft and gentle music in the open air. My use of the lith print with its painterly quality brings together the fairy candles, Bach’s music, and the garden. Where the music cannot be seen but only heard, visually the physical presence of fairy candles embody their enchanting attendance.

The balance found in Kamelia Pezeshki’s photographs recalibrate our attention to detail. Born in Iran in 1963 and educated at the University of Utah, today Kamelia makes her home in the city of Toronto. The frenetic chaos of Canada’s largest city is conspicuously absent from her work, where she focuses instead on an introspective sensibility using traditional film photography with its hands-on engagement.
