Title: Spadina rainforest
About this piece: “Spadina Rainforest” explores the immigrant experience through surreal contrast: snow mingling with tropical foliage, and the Dragon Monumental Gate of Toronto’s Chinatown gate standing amid an otherworldly landscape. The central figure, a Venezuelan man clad in his national colours and armed with a spear, represents resilience and adaptation in a strange new land. The coexistence of cultural symbols reflects how migration fuses memories of home with new realities, forming a hybrid sense of belonging. The world around the character, beautiful but confusing, reflects the nature of psychological space developing in the newcomer’s mind.

Diego is a fine artist born in Venezuela that is currently living and working in Toronto. His work explores the cultural impact of the social crisis in his native country and relies on symbolism to explore the ideas and sentiments born from this reality. The use of allegory in his paintings provides an artistic translation of social concepts like the interpretative approach of an anthropological study.
