Afsaneh Akhoondi is an Iranian-Canadian visual artist and educator based in Toronto. Her art practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation with depictions of plants, animals, and humans in their surroundings to explore themes of heterotopia. Afsaneh's work delves into the concept of heterotopia, inspired by Michel Foucault, as she examines the interplay between subjects and their environments Afsaneh Akhoondi's art draws inspiration from diverse sources, depicting women against warm, fluorescent backgrounds. Her 2D installations use various materials and techniques, including Plexiglas and mixed media for cutouts and canvases. Her themes reflect her experiences as an Iranian woman who lived through revolutions, wars, sanctions, and sociopolitical crises. She applies this background to her work through colour, composition, and diverse artistic methods, resulting in her unique approach to colour, composition, and techniques. Akhoondi holds bachelor's and master's degrees in painting from Azad University in Tehran, Iran, and a post-diploma certificate from Centennial College in Toronto. Seven solo exhibitions have been held in installation artwork, drawing, and printmaking, as well as in several national and international group exhibitions. Beyond her artistic practice, she leveraged her deep understanding of art theory to author numerous articles for art magazines and newspapers, offering insightful explorations and reviews of contemporary art.
