Sarah Letovsky completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University, where she was the recipient of the 2014 Mrs. W.O. Forsyth Award for Excellence in Painting. Whether creating large-scale paintings or one of her on-going series of watercolours, Letovsky’s practice explores the intimacy of the female face. Strongly influenced by a background in film and literature, her work is an interesting exploration of the female narrative, as the artist approaches portraiture through diverse techniques, juxtaposing a realistic human gaze with the materiality of the paint. Through the use of gestural mark-making and flat space, she contrasts the humanity of the gaze against the materiality of paint, creating a push and pull of mimesis and metaphor.
