Matt Donovan

Matt Donovan is an artist and industrial designer. Formally trained in Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art and Design, but with an instinctive understanding of engineering, he has built a career in which design and art are inseparable. Until recently, Donovan has worked almost exclusively in collaborations. Most notably in a conceptual art practice with Hallie Siegel, and with Max Dean and Raffaello D’Andrea on Dean’s legendary Robotic Chair.

Donovan’s recent solo practice combines the dual aspects of his career – the concept work and the technical design. On offer at this year’s Art Gems is Skull, part of his LEGO series, which illustrates the artist’s fascination with creating works that are thoughtful and sophisticated, but also fun and uniquely his. Donovan’s work can be found in numerous corporate and public collections, including BMO, The Donovan Collection (University of Toronto), Philbrook Museum Outdoor Sculpture Garden (Tulsa, OK), Museum Tinguely (Basel, Switzerland), and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). He is represented in Toronto by Olga Korper Gallery.
