Darby Milbrath

Born in Victoria, Darby Milbrath’s expressionist paintings are informed by her memories of innocence, the nostalgia for her imaginative childhood, the landscape of the West Coast Gulf Islands, and her past life as a dancer. Her work explores decadence and darkness, her delicate and harmonious figures suspended in a world made up of dark globs of medieval hues and oozing floral blooms. Entirely self-taught, Milbrath often pulls from her background in dance for her subject matter, which usually includes bodies (often female) in movement. More recently, she has been branching out and experimenting with landscapes and animals.

Recent exhibitions include The Morning Shines With The Lights Of Love at the Clint Roenisch Gallery (Toronto), Domestic Tranquility at 0-0 LA (Los Angeles), Blue Hyacinth at Erin Stump Projects (Toronto) and Projet Pangée (Montreal). A recent career highlight is the adaption of one of her botanical paintings into a sequin bomber jacket, designed by Hedi Slimane, which debuted in Celine’s Spring 2020 menswear collection in Paris. Milbrath is represented by Projet Pangée in Montreal. |
